Facial rejuvenation acupuncture versus other options like surgery
There are various options to counteract ageing, but for those who prefer a more natural, holistic and safe approach, facial rejuvenation acupuncture has become a popular choice. As facial rejuvenation acupuncture is not as dramatic as its more invasive counterparts (surgery, Botox, fillers) the results are much more natural. This is because the whole face benefits from a subtle yet effective boost and the effect does not look overdone.

Basis of Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture – Beauty from Inside Out
Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is based on the principle of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that our external appearance reflects our internal health.  The concept of ‘beauty from inside out’ is expressed in terms of having internal health that transforms itself into exterior beauty. Therefore facial rejuvenation acupuncture leads to a greater feeling of well-being and vibrant skin rejuvenation.

History of facial rejuvenation acupuncture
Facial rejuvenation acupuncture was incorporated into the beauty regime for the empresses and the emperors’ concubine as early as the Sung Dynasty (960AD-1270AD).The use of acupuncture in cosmetology, especially in preventing and reducing wrinkles, has attracted great attention in Japan, Hong Kong, and Sweden.

Western medicine perspective on facial rejuvenation acupuncture
As we age, collagen production slows down, making it increasingly difficult to maintain our skin tone and elasticity. Acupuncture increases circulation to the skin and facial muscles. Therefore it stimulates the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the skin, increases collagen production and lymphatic drainage, and reduces puffiness. Acupuncture also diminish wrinkles by reducing tension around them.

Course of treatment
Generally, a course of treatment consists of 10-12 sessions. The effects become most noticeable and lasting on or about the sixth to seventh session. Each person responds differently, depending on his or her condition and lifestyle prior to and during the treatment series. Following the initial course of treatment, maintenance sessions can prolong the results for five to ten years. It is often recommended to supplement the facial Rejuvenation program with herbal and nutritional supplements, authentic aromatherapy blends for the skin, and a healthy diet.

A 1996 report in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture reported that among 300 cases treated with Facial Acupuncture, 90% had marked effects with one course of treatment. The effects included: the skin becoming delicate and fair, greater elasticity of the facial muscles, diminished wrinkles, better facial complexion, and overall rejuvenation–not confined to the face.

The Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine published an article in 2013 regarding “the effect of facial rejuvenation acupuncture on facial elasticity”. It concluded that the treatment showed “promising results as a therapy for facial elasticity”.

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is contraindicated for pituitary tumours, heart diseases, diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, for people who have a problem with bleeding or bruising, or who currently suffer from migraine headaches. Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture should not be administered during pregnancy, or during the time of having a cold, flu, acute allergy, or if experiencing an acute herpes outbreak.
